This data comes from eight jurisdictions in King County that have historically had over 90% of firearm violence, but also includes data from many of the smaller jurisdictions in King County.

The graph below shows the numbers of firearm homicide victims, nonfatal shooting victims, and total shots fired incidents from January through September 2021.

This does not include suicides or officer involved shootings.

Shooting Victim Demographics

Of the 356 shooting victims: 302 were male (85%); 112 were between the ages of 18-24 (32%); and 289 were people of color (81%). Similar to previous years, 178 (50%) of the shooting victims were Black or African American.

During the first three quarters of 2021, there were 48% more shots fired and 76% more shooting victims compared to the pervious four-year average.  

Moreover, the number of fatal shooting victims increased 71% while the number of non-fatal shooting victims increases 77% since 2017. 

Comparing 2020 to 2021

There have been 14 more fatal shooting victims and 86 more non-fatal shooting victims in 2021 as compared to the same time period in 2020.
